Meet Dr. Myia Wilkes, DC

From the Soccer Pitch to Chiropractic
Dr. Myia Wilkes grew up in Calgary with a clear goal. Since she was 12, she knew she wanted to play soccer in the United States, and she made it happen by earning a soccer scholarship to San Jose State University. There, she studied biology, a natural pick since the human body had been her favourite subject in high school. She graduated in 2018.
She first visited a chiropractor during university. After a concussion on the field, her team suggested she see a chiropractor for her neck pain and headaches. Like many first-timers, she was a little nervous walking in. That visit gave her a first look at chiropractic care, though it would be a few more years before she saw it as a career.
Finding Her Path
After graduation, Dr. Myia played professional soccer in Norway and Germany. When COVID-19 brought her home, she started coaching and shadowing different professions to figure out her next step. Optometry was on the list until she realized she couldn’t spend her days in a dark room without moving around. Then she shadowed a chiropractor and knew right away. She also noticed she’d never met a chiropractor who didn’t love their job. That said a lot.
She earned her Doctor of Chiropractic from Life Chiropractic College West in Hayward, California, graduating in 2023.
Her Approach to Care
Dr. Myia knew the team well before she officially joined. She completed her preceptorship at Aria Health and Wellness Clinic while finishing school and fell for the people, the clinic and its downtown Victoria location. She also appreciates having a wide range of tools on hand, from adjusting instruments to spinal decompression.
She sees a wide variety of patients and tailors her approach to each person. Her techniques include Diversified, the Activator Method, drop table adjusting and instrument assisted soft tissue massage (IASTM). She has also completed Webster Technique training, so she adjusts pregnant patients too.
One area she’s particularly interested in is vestibular care. She works with people dealing with vertigo, as well as those who’ve had ongoing dizziness without a clear cause. Right now, she’s taking continuing education courses on the TMJ (jaw joint) to broaden what she can offer.
Life on Vancouver Island
Dr. Myia moved to Vancouver Island for the milder weather and to be closer to her two brothers, who live here. She now calls Langford home, and you’ll often find her running laps at the track or around Langford Lake. She also lifts weights, paints portraits and reads plenty of fantasy novels. The Name of the Wind and Sarah J. Maas’s Throne of Glass series are a couple of favourites. She loves to travel, too, and a family trip to Costa Rica is next on her list.
