The Supportive Effects of Custom Orthotics

heel painYour feet play an important role in your overall health. Specifically, they perform an intimate role in the biomechanics of the knees and the hips—of every step we take. Your feet serve as the strong base of your body. That’s why you want them to be functioning at their peak.

What Are Orthotics?

More than a heel or pad you put in your shoe, orthotics are in-shoe inserts that are made specifically for your feet. So while it may be tempting to purchase orthotics at the drugstore or local big box store, custom orthotics are superior in quality to store-bought inserts.

What to Expect

The first step in getting orthotics is to take a scan of your foot so we can see where specifically your foot needs support and where we can allow more give for the foot. At times, feet can benefit from wearing extra support or orthotic. When we prescribe orthotics to patients sometimes they have foot complaints but often they’re complaining of knee pain or hip pain.

Issues that Orthotics Can Address

Orthotics have many uses including the correction of foot deformities. To determine if such a deformity exists, we will provide an examination, take X-rays if it is deemed necessary and perform an orthotics scan of the feet. Orthotics also have other benefits. They can help to:

  • Protect or support an injury
  • Promote healing
  • Reduce pain
  • Increase the mobility of the foot
